Pass First

Do you remember when running backs WERE football? Years ago, nobody talked about wide receivers much. Nobody certainly ever mentioned tight ends. It was the running back. The game was played between the lines, not in the air. But not anymore.

The NFL has become a pass first league. Running is used in three situations - to eat up the clock after you have a lead, to punch the ball in at the 1 yard line, and against a team you know has a wide open defense. That's it. There are no featured backs anymore. The running back load is shared among two sometimes three and on some teams even more players. Sure there are some backs who still rack up the yards but by and large the focus is in the air and on the arm of the QBs.

Huge numbers are being put up by QBs to start the season this year. Balls are flying fast and furious through the air. Receivers and tight ends are making spectacular catches down the field for mass yards. Teams start with the pass. They move the ball with the pass. They cover the field with the pass.

Players like Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rogers, Cam Newton and others are throwing the ball like it's on fire. Brady and Newton are putting up massive numbers each game so far. While Newton has a couple of receivers, Brady is throwing the ball to everyone but me. It has changed the game.....completely.

There have been a record 15,771 net passing yards through the first two weeks. That is a staggering number. Teams have scored 172 TDs and put up a total of 1502 points through 2 weeks of the season. Even more to the point, the players themselves have shifted. Running backs are some of the top receivers in the league. Instead of running the ball, they are catching it. Mike Tolbert of the Chargers has 17 catches. The Bears Matt Forte and the Saints Darren Sproles have 15 catches each.

The ball is flying through the first two weeks of the season and pass first has become the mantra for almost every team. It could be a year for the record books.

Giving Back

In the world of youth sports there is one constant, most of the jobs are done by those who are volunteers or who give up some portion of their own lives to benefit the program. From little league to scouting to Legion baseball programs. It is those who choose to give back that make the difference. The difference in the lives of young athletes and the difference in their own lives as well. In Montana, there is Legion baseball not high school baseball. Two former Billings Montana American Legion baseball players chose to give back to the teams and programs that helped shape their lives into and after high school. This is just a part of their stories.

Matt Edwards and Riley Corcoran have followed similar paths to a point. Both played Legion baseball in high school. They played on "opposing" city squads. Both of their families have a long tradition of involvement in youth sports in Billlings. Both chose to give back to the program that they themselves got so much out of. I asked them a few questions to learn a little bit more about those choices and about them as men as well.

The first question was different to each. For Matt, What, besides your connection with family, made you want to coach with the Royals? He said he always wanted to coach and give back to the program and after a year of college baseball he felt that he had even more to offer. He didn't think it would be this early in his life, but he saw and opportunity and went for it. As soon as he found out he would be coaching, he started writing down everything that his college team did at practice and for games to use that to help in coaching with the Legion team. For Riley, What was your biggest accomplishment connected with graduating college at Washington State? He stated that graduating in 4 years was an accomplishment he was very proud of. Also winning the Keith Jackson award and being on the watch list for the Jim Nance award were also great accomplishments for him. He said that he turned down 2 opportunities to sports announcing for minor league teams to return to coach for the Billings Scarlets as he felt they would be a very special group this year.

Next for both, During all the rained out games this season, how did you keep the team motivated? Matt said that it wasn't hard at all with this group of players this year because they all have the same goals and were able to stay focused on those. They knew that other teams in the area were in the same boat and they knew if they just kept working through the weather, they would come out even better than some of the other teams who might not put in the work due to the weather. For Riley, he said that the weather cancellations made the team even more focused on the games they did play. That those games meant even more because each cancellation meant that the remaining games counted just that much more. He said the team's own mindset kept them motivated to keep focused on the games at hand.

For both, In the ups and downs of the season so far, winning and losing, how have you kept the team focused? Matt replied, The kids understand that its a long season and as long as we play our best baseball by the middle of the year that we will be fine. We have the kids look at every game like they are play 9 one inning games and that as long as long as we win each inning the outcome will be in our favor. They stay focused by looking at the small things of the game instead of the whole game. By shortening their outlook on the whole game to just one inning at a time, they seem to be more focused. Riley said, with only 2 losses thus far this season, keeping the team up hasn't been that difficult. But in the two losses, he thinks that the team knew that they beat themselves and that they just have to keep focused on the next game at hand and move forward taking each new game as a new opportunity.

For both, What do you think you bring to the team as a coach? Former player? Matt said, as a coach I feel I help give the kids more insight on the things that they will have to look forward to in playing at the next level. I think that the more things they learn about the college game now, the easier transition they will have at the next level. By bringing back tools from college, we have an advantage to our opponents who dont have that knowledge. As a player coming back, the kids understand that I have been there and played at the level of baseball they look forward to playing. They know that the things I have them do is what they will have to do when they get to the next level and know that the adjustments they make now is just a leg up at the college level. Riley said many of the same things as Matt but also added that being just a few years removed from both high school life and playing Legion baseball, he felt that he was more able to relate to the players. That they felt comfortable in listening and talking to him but at the same time respected him for all he has accomplished.

For both, What do you get from the players and the team during your coaching experience? Matt said, In all honesty, the kids give me more than I can ever give them. Sometimes, it gets hard to find the heart to play 6 of 7 days a week. It gets tiring and can beat you down mentally and physically and with these guys, they make my job easy by always having an upbeat attitude and always ready to go. Of course, along the way we have had those last games on road trips where its hard for the kids to stay focused on the game and instead of going home but they always somehow manage to find that next gear and push through it. They have alot of heart that rubs off and makes me and all the coaches excited to get to the park everyday. Riley replied, that even though he is only 21 that the players still make him feel "young." When he said it, he had the biggest smile on his face and you could tell that it went straight to his heart. He said that the players who are are still very young some of them even though it might be only 5 years or so younger than he is, it still makes him feel young to be able to share in the place in their lives where they are now. To relive the past games of his own by sharing in their successes.

For both, What has been the hardest thing that you have dealt with while coaching? Riley said, losing the state championship game in 2010. It was a very tough loss and he spent many a day in texts with the players after he went back to college talking about the loss. It was felt throughout the team and was a big blow to everyone. He was able to offer encouragement to the players and get them focused on this year and the goals that were upcoming. Matt said, The hardest thing for me coaching would be understanding that the kids are only teenagers and they do make mistakes. You can teach them everything you know and put in the time with them and at the end of the day they're still human and they will make mistakes and just learning how to keep them positive has been a challenge, but just like everything else we have thrown at them they overcome it and give it their all.

For both, tell me your most teachable moment, meaning something you were able to share that is outside baseball, that can resonate in their personal lives? Riley said, the transition from high school to college and all that that involves. The transition for their education and how important their education is now in high school. Talking about girls and relationships. Getting them focused on the next challenge and the next step in their lives. Staying relatable so that they always feel comfortable in coming to him with whatever is on their minds. Matt said, at the end of the day win or lose it's just a game and the game is fun. One day, your career will come to an end and you will have to do something else, and there is more to life than baseball. I remind them that they dont have to come to the park that they get to and not every kid has that opportunity. The other thing is that I tell them to look beyond yourself and look at your parents and the things they do every single day just to make sure you can be on the field and the thing they sacrafice just so you can have this opportunity.

For both, What are your goals for the team this year? Riley responded with, to win the state title as their first and foremost goal. If they don't win that then any goal after that becomes a mute point. Focus on having a great regular season and getting to that state title game. If they accomplish that, then they can start thinking about goals beyond that point, but first they have to reach that goal. Matt said, Just like every coach we want a State Championship. With that being said we all know that in order to get to that goal we need to take care of business in our conference. We want to keep the future in the future and focus on the present. We remind the kids that if we take the season one day at a time and one inning at a time, that by the end of the year we will be sitting well and everything will fall in to place for us.

For both, What are your personal goals? Matt said, my personal goals are to be successful in whatever I end up doing. College is in the past as I recently recieved my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice and I plan on finding a job involved in law enforcement. I have realized after a year of coaching, that I feel the better fit for me is in the dugout coaching instead of playing. I feel that I have more to offer from the other side of the fence. In my life, I want to continue coaching and helping the Royals out as much as I can. Hopefully, somewhere down the road my career will allow me to coach and have a job in law enforcement. Riley said, that his main goal, one that he has had for many years now, is to be on ESPN by the time he is 30 years old. He graduated from Washington State with a degree in Communications and Broadcasting and was heavily involved in announcing college games in many sports there. He said that he hopes to do play by play for minors and/or major league teams for the next 4 to 5 years and then move on to his ultimate goal. He said that when that career is done, he wants to return to the Billings Scarlets to coach.

For both of these young men, they give back so much to the Legion program and yet, they get so much back through the giving as well. It is because of young men like them that a program like Montana American Legion baseball can exist and flourish. They touch the lives of so many young men and bring knowledge, experience and tools for life beyond baseball that are invaluable. In Friday night's game, it was once again rained out in the 3rd inning, but they move forward. Always focused on the next game. Always teaching baseball and life's little lessons that become part of another young man's life. Giving back has never been done better.

Character Is What Matters

Another windy night at the ballpark but at least it's not raining....yet. The season has had a rough go with a lot of missed games due to all the rain and flooding in Montana this year. As many as 20 games missed by some teams so far this season. Of course, all that rain has made the field an absolutely emerald green of lushness in the hazy June evening sun.

Tonight is the Billings Legion Baseball "Fight Against Cancer" night. Before the game, the legion teams hosted a blood drive with over 100 participants donating blood. In the weeks leading up to the game and going on all season long, the teams were raising money to donate to the Pathways survivorship program at the Billings Clinic. Anyone who wished to contribute could purchase a virtual seat, a virtual base or a virtual pitcher's mound. Those donating could also make dedications to people that had been lost to cancer, those that survived and those still in the fight. During tonight's game, the teams planned to show the dedications made thus far on the scoreboard between plays and between innings. The legion baseball program focuses not only on teaching baseball but teaching life and character as well. This is a great teaching tool for the boys.

Tonight's game is conference showdown between the two city teams made up of players from the area high schools. It is a great rivalry that generally draws a very good crowd. With all the missed games this season, the game becomes all the more important. The Billings Scarlets, who generally wear red and white, take the field in purple and white jerseys to honor the fight against cancer. They look like jewels dotting the emerald grass in the June sun. The Scarlets are having a great season so far and come into this game against the Billings Royals undefeated with a 10-0 record.

As the wind blows in across the field, I am reminded of how fleeting life can be. I lost my grandmother many years ago to cancer and know the pain this disease can cause. A fleeting brief time on this earth, just like the wind people come and go in our lives and in the in between there is summer and green grass and baseball and for a brief time life is sweet and very, very magical.

The Scarlets take control of the game early and the Royals suffered several errors that led to runs. The game was won by the Scarlets with a score of 16-4. It was a game that both teams wanted to win. It was a game that counted in the conference standings. It was a game for city bragging rights. More than that though, the game was a chance for the players to learn character. The character that comes with having a blood drive. The character that comes with raising money for cancer services in their own city. The character that comes with remembering those who have been lost, those that survived and those still fighting the fight. The character that comes with knowing that every moment in this life is precious and it is the character with which you face each part of it that is the most important thing that can be learned. Yes, winning and losing touch their lives, but living and dying touch it much more. Developing the character, nurturing it, helping it grow can guide them through the wins and losses and through the living and the dying and all the in between.

I love Legion baseball. The players are completely focused on the game. They aren't playing for fame or for money. They want to win. They are also still young enough to learn that character is the most important thing they can learn during their playing days with the Legion. That when baseball playing days have come and gone, that their character is what they will be judged on. Not what games they won or lost 20 years ago. I'm proud to know so many of these players who know what's important and I can't wait to see the lives they continue to touch.

If you want to make a donation to the Billings American Legion Baseball Fight Against Cancer go HERE the page will remain up all season.

“Everyone tries to define this thing called Character. It's not hard. Character is doing what's right when nobody's looking.”

Cabrera To Return To Field

On Monday, Miguel Cabrera will return to the field for the Tigers for the first time since his latest DUI related arrest. Cabrera is scheduled to DH for the Tigers in their Monday spring training game.

The Tigers have said that Cabrera is receiving treatment off the field for his alcohol issues but he will be on the field with the team and he will be their starting first baseman on opening day. They are obviously convinced that he will get next to no punishment at his arraignment for his DUI arrest that is upcoming or at least none that will interfere with his playing baseball. The Tigers also seem convinced that he will get the appropriate treatment off the field and still be able to play baseball every day of the season. I hope they are right. I really do.

To me though, the Tigers while seeming to do things to help Cabrera the person, are more concerned with keeping him on the field for the team. They have a huge amount of money tied up in him and other players they have signed in the hopes of being competitive this season and making it to the post season. If Cabrera were to miss games because of an inpatient treatment program, which he most likely needs, or because he has another DUI related arrest or something worse, the Tigers hopes would be considerably less for the 2011 season. This is of course the argument used to justify Cabrera not going into inpatient rehab and most likely to justify his not getting any significant punishment from his arrest.

I hope that the Tigers and MLB have made the right decision on this. A man's life is at stake here, not to mention anyone's lives he might affect if he drinks and drives. All ultimately much more important than any baseball game.

Duerson's Death Poses Questions and Maybe Some Answers

Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson tragically ended his life last week by suicide. Before doing so, he made it clear that he wanted his brain donated for study after his death. Duerson's suicide poses questions but it may also provide answers and guidance for the NFL and for the players.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE is the disorder linked to the 2006 suicide of former Philadelphia Eagle Andre Waters. Chris Nowinski, co-director the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University, said 13 of the 14 NFL players they have studied post-mortem have had the disease, including Andre Waters. Waters was the first NFL player to have his brain studied after death. CTE is linked to cognitive and behavioral problems including depression and impulse control later in life. It eventually causes dementia.

There are currently 300 athletes enrolled in a study at the center where they are examining the brains of former athletes over time. Members of the study undergo annual tests to determine any decline and they all agree to donate their brains and spinal cords after they die for study. Many athletes enrolled in the program already show signs of having the disorder.

The NFL has put a lot of talk behind their concern over player injuries from concussions, but there has been little more than talk. There is no helmet rebuilds in the pipeline. They still send players back into games if they can pass simple sideline tests. They do not take nearly as seriously brain injuries as they do something like a knee injury. Players who have had multiple concussions over games continue to play risking further possible injury. The studies help to answer questions but little is done to prevent the injuries themselves.

More and more information will come out as more and more players brains are studies and the results released. The NFL, if they are indeed serious about protection of players, must take steps for prevention so that answers after the fact are not all the players and their families are left with.

Spring

baseballThe first MLB spring training game is just 19 days away and the best time of the year will start for me. I love sports, all sports, but baseball is something more than love. It is an obsession.

Fields of green touched by sparkling sun

filled with hopes and dreams anew

Games to be lost games to be won

nothing so beautiful 'tis true

Baseball is beautiful. It's a ballet of talent and statistics. It's a game of heroes and scapegoats. It's a game of mortals and those beyond mortality. It's a game of history and changing history.robinson

On the first day of spring training in the beautiful Florida or Arizona sun as the rays of light stream across the green manicured fields, sparkling clean uniforms and fans who have waited through the winter, the feeling of all is right with the world sweeps over all those in attendance. It becomes a sort of hushed church of sports for the briefest of moments as the sights and sounds of it sweep over for the first time of the season. There is nothing like it in sports...the first spring training game.

It is the epitome of optimism. When the losses and short comings of the past season are wiped clean. Where the memories of almost and so close become faded and distant. It's a rebirth just like spring. Where the brown and seemingly lifelessness of winter turns into the new green, leaves, flowers, birds of spring. The colors of the teams blend with the colors of the sunny fields of dreams once again open to the possibilities of the season.

beautifulBaseball is beautiful in every sense. In the colors, the smell, the joy, the sorrows. It's beautiful in the numbers and the managerial schemes. It's beautiful in the wins and in the losses. The first game of spring training is quite possibly the most beautiful of all sports events. A complex ballet of color, numbers, smells and sounds....and only 19 days away.

Assigning Blame

blameIn sports, as in life, when a team fails it becomes everyone's job to assign blame. There has to be a reason why they lost. It has to be someone's fault.

The sports media assigns blame one by one so that they have enough stories to fill 24 hours of programming and writing. The players blame so it doesn't fall on them. The player's wives blame so it doesn't fall on their spouse. On and on it goes down the list until eventually everyone is to blame. And in truth, everyone is to blame. Teams win and lose as teams, not individuals.

The Patriots lost the Super Bowl themselves. By their actions, inactions, and mistakes, they lost the game. They lost the game as a team, not as individuals. Believe me, there is plenty of blame to go around for the entire team, coaches included.

Tom Brady did not play like the Tom Brady we are all used to watching. He made poor choices. He threw balls behind receivers. He was out of rhythm because he couldn't move past Gronkowski or the plays that Gronkowski had been part of all year.Tom

The receivers dropped balls. They missed routes. They made poor choices in coverage. It was all of them, not one of them at the last of the game. There were plenty of opportunities early that could have helped the team that were missed.

The defense gave too much room to the Giants receivers allowing them to make almost every single catch unmolested. They created turnovers but were unable to get the ball. They got to Eli but not enough to put him out of rhythm. There were several instances of blown coverage and misread plays.

billThe coaches made some terrible play calls. Gronkowski never should have played and the Patriots should have structured their game plan accordingly. They should have conceded the touchdown at the end of the game much sooner to allow for more time for Tom and the offense to get down the field and score without so much time pressure. They should have managed the clock much better. They should have used Branch and Ochocinco more, if for nothing more than defensive distractions.

There was blame for everyone because you lose as a team. To say that it was one person's fault in the last seconds of the game is a cop out. The Patriots lost the game as a team plain and simple. They now have about 6 months to accept that and correct what they did wrong....as a team.Pats

The way it should be

All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again. Honestly, did we expect anything different?

You really couldn't ask for a better Super Bowl matchup than the Patriots and the Giants. The storylines pretty much write themselves.

Eli Manning has a chance to outdo Peyton. Tom Brady has his second chance to, perhaps, become the greatest post-season quarterback of all-time --if not out-and-out best quarterback.

Oh yeah, and then there's that whole rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl aspect.

Both teams are entering into Super Bowl XLIV coming off emotionally draining victories. The Patriots won in off a Ray Finkle-esque field goal choke by Billy Cundiff. It took overtime, on the road, for the Giants to make it back. But unlike in 2008, there is no definitive favorite going in with the Patriots currently sitting at just a 3 1/2 point favorite.

During the time between now and the game, we will be inundated with memories of 18-1*, of the Catch, the Scramble, and the Choke. We will be reminded, ad nasseum, of the little guys from New York who did the impossible. And the giants from New England who let the impossible slip away.

But more than that, this is Bill Belichick's chance to win post Spygate. This is Tom Coughlin's chance to show the people that called for his head, after the disappointing 2010 and 2011 campaigns, that they were wrong.

This is Eli's chance to show that he truly is an elite quarterback. It's Brady's chance, after a relatively un-Brady-like performance against the Ravens, to show he is still a clutch performer. It is the moment when Eli could show that he, not his brother, is the main rival to Tom Brady. It is Tom Brady's chance to dispell that idea.

And this is the Patriots' chance to show that the 2008 game against the Giants was a fluke, while it is the Giants' chance to show it was not.

As much as I loved the story of Alex Smith's redemption story, and as much as I believed --still believe-- that any one of the four teams who played yesterday could have realistically won in Indianapolis, I don't think I would have wanted the last two teams to be anyone other than who they ended up being.

February 5, 2012 is a day for redemption for either the Patriots or the Giants. It could be the final chapter in the book of Brady, or the second prologue to the book of Eli. Everyone will be watching to see which teams show up. And that's the way it should be.

The NFL Rules

NFLThe Packers have been upset by Eli Manning and the Giant's D. The Tebow time clock has struck midnight. Arian Foster gashed the Ravens defense in a losing effort. The lead changed four times in the last four minutes of the Saints 49ers game. The NFL playoffs have a lot of excitement to offer, but I believe they have two fundamental issues with their current format.

The first issues that I see with the NFL is their new overtime rules. They claim that it is no longer a sudden death format, which I suppose is true unless the first team scores a touchdown. Wait, hold on a second, does that mean if a team scores a touchdown on their first possession then the other team does not get a chance with the ball? Yes, that is exactly what the NFL playoff overtime rules state.

Some people may overlook this as just part of the game, but in my opinion it is exactly not part of the game. Football is unique for many reasons and a big one is that the same players do not play offense and defense like most other sports. So, how can the NFL legitimize its decision to eliminate essentially half of the sport. If the league does not allow both offenses to have a possession then they ruin football. Some teams base their identity off of just offense or defense, so to not allow one of those sides to play is like taking away the three point shot for some teams in a basketball overtime. The NFL may have changed their rules a little, but they have only come half way. The Broncos Steelers game was a tragedy to football because Big Ben did not even get a chance to give his team a victory in overtime.

Overtime is one issue, but it does not come up in every game. An aspect of the game that is a real issue during every NFL game is video review. Why can the officials only review plays during the last two minutes of a half. If a play is wrong, then a team should receive the correct call without having to risk a timeout on it. Also, the fact that they only review plays that are called a touchdown is a good rule, but why do they not also review plays that are close to a touchdown but are ruled down at the one yards line. This rule only benefits the defense. Why should a team lose a touchdown because of a review, but not have the chance to gain one unless they challenge the call themselves. The rule is once again half way.

The NFL is about halfway to having rules that make sense, but until then we will have to deal with poor rules. All I can say is that the NFL should just adopt the college overtime and official review rules.

You're welcome BCS...

When it comes to college football, I am an SEC fan. I believe that the SEC is, far and away, the best conference in college football. However, I absolutely abhor this "title" fight between two SEC teams.

The BCS has lost all credibility in putting two teams who are not only in the same conference but in the same division against one another for the national championship. The beauty of college football is that every game matters. The entire season is more or less a playoff. It is supposed to be one loss and you are out. Alabama had that one loss. They lost to LSU. They didn’t win their division, and they didn’t win their conference championship. Hell, they weren’t even in their conference championship game.

It’s hard. I do admit that Alabama and LSU are, most likely, the two best teams in the country. Nevertheless, they should not be meeting on this stage for this game. If there was ever a time for a plus one, or a playoff, it would be now; but, that is not going to happen.

So instead, I would love for the BCS to add one simple modification to its formula. Simply stated: if you do not win your conference championship game, or your conference if it is one without a championship game, then you cannot play for the BCS title. Problem solved.

Now time to prepare to watch a game with two teams –who as an Auburn fan– I loathe. See you next year BCS. Hopefully you don’t mess it up again, unfortunately you probably will.
